Fabric for visor

For those of you who have made your own visors where have you purchased the material? I want to make sure that the fabric has UV protection and is waterproof.

Thanks, Greg

I purchased this fabric for the visor,  https://www.sailrite.com/Ripstop-White-1-5oz-60
( Fits the Tab 400, not sure about the other models.)

I added a Velcro strip along the Keder so LED lights could be attached. Blue lights shown in the photo. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D7SSVCQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Tubular webbing for the perimeter of the visor, the Aluminum tent poles are inserted into the tubular webbing  https://www.strapworks.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=STPW213

Thanks DeltaPop! A couple more questions: Is the ripstop waterproof and have UV protection? I cant tell from the link.  How did you choose the aluminum over the fiberglass?

    Thanks?

PS: Your visor looks really great!

I used Solarium print fabric I found at Joann’s on sale.  It has a canvas-like texture.  It says it is UV resistant and water resistant.  We got a hard rain the last time out, and the only part that leaked were the seams - doh!  I bought some tent seam sealer from REI that I’m going to try for that.

The chains are part of a  Anderson no sway hitch.
My wife is  very uncomfortable when pulling trailers, she remembers growing up, sitting in the back seat of her father's car swaying back and forth. The hitch system does make the trailer rock solid when passing large trucks on windy days. Is it necessary? No, but sometimes you have to lose the battle to win the war.

A couple more questions: Is the ripstop waterproof and have UV protection? I can't tell from the link.  How did you choose the aluminum over the fiberglass?

The fabric is used for Sails, water will not pass thru and it has  UV protection. Regardless, the Sun will deteriorate any fabric if left in the Sun long enough.
With the amount of UV exposure the fabric receives on a camping trip, I expect it will outlast me.

I selected the  Aluminum poles over  Fiberglass poles because I enjoy working with Aluminum, have the tools to work with it and it does not splinter when cutting.

@DeltaPop, I considered the antisway hitch, but then I thought maybe it was a way to prevent theft of something😀

For reference, here's a close up view of the fabric on our Pahaque visor.  Ms. Katydid seemed to like it.

I have no photos of the build but can offer a few comments on the construction.

Keep in mind I built this for a Tab 400, not sure if it will fit the other models.

I developed a CAD model ( Cardboard Aided Design) from a manila folder to test the radius and dimensions, from this I determined a 78” radius would fully use the 60” wide fabric.

    The result was a 5’ x 13’ visor with a 17’ 6” circumference.

Using the above  dimensions will require 13’ of Keder rope and Aluminum or Fiberglass tent poles of at least 18’ ( I cut a bit off to fit) for the visor circumference.

I used Sunbrella 1” binding on all edges of the visor, for me this is much quicker than folding a hem and dealing with the puckering. Same reason for using the tubing on the circumference.

Seamstick 3/8” wide basting tape to hold all fabric parts in position prior to sewing. I use Seamstick on all my projects as it improves the finished appearance.

A Juki 1541 sewing machine and V-92 thread. About 1 hour to sew complete.

I attached a Red loop on the end of the Keder rope to aid in orientation of the visor and assist in rapid setup.

The tie downs on the lower Keder rail were made from short sections of the Keder rope fastened to Nylon strap and “D” rings.

I will be happy to answer any additional questions.

@DeltaPop The loops at the end sound like a very helpful addition.
