Surge protectors

I have purchased a 30A protector for my 320 CSS. IF I hook up to 50A shore with a 50 to 30 adapter cable am I putting my system at risk? Will I still be seeing 50A to the trailer?

No, you will only hook up to one leg of the 50 amp, you will be fine and your draw is limited to 30 amps.

You will need an adapter (pigtail) that directs the needed Power to the correct pins on the 30 amp surge protector. You will only receive 30 amps, 110V, just what your T@B needs.

50 amp to 30 amp adapter or pigtail:

50 Amp is 4 Pin and 30 Amp is 3 Pin, main difference being separate ground circuits for each power wire. With that being said, you will need to use an adapter to connect a 30 Amp Plug to into 50 Amp Outlet.

So plug the adapter into the 50 amp socket on the shore power then plug the surge protector into the adapter and finally my 320 into the surge?

I stand slightly corrected, there are 2 Power Wires on a 50 Amp, 1 Neutral and 1 Ground. The 30 Amp has 1 Power Wire and the neutral and ground. Still have to use the adapter. I have attached a diagram that shows this difference.

Electrical current is a on demand system, a 50-amp source provides power up to 50 amps.  What you actually use depends on the load (your trailer) that you connect.  A 20 or 30 amp load on a 50 amp circuit will only result in getting  20 or 30 amps to the trailer.  Connecting to a 50-amp source does not automatically give you 50 amps of electricity surging through your trailer, unlike the water connection which pushes the tap pressure through your trailer.  Using the surge protector and correct adapters will prevent any dangerous electrical situations.

The danger in electrical wiring, is using wires designed for 20 or 30 amps on a circuit that is creating a 40 or 50 amp load (not likely with the TaB), which can result in a fire due to the undersized wires getting too hot.  But in our Tabs, the circuit breakers and wires are sized correctly for the loads they are designed for, so no worries here.
If you make any mods to your wiring, just be sure to error on thensidemofmusing too large a wire gauge, rather than tools small.   ;)
