Victron Smart Solar MPPT will not pair with iPhone

jpi68jpi68 Member Posts: 80
We are camping near Sugarcreek and had the factory solar system installed in our 2019 T@B 400. I paired my phone with it yesterday and was able to read the amount of amps the solar panel was generating and all the other information that the program provides on the APP. This morning I could not get the program to show me any info... I told the iPhone to “forget this device” and tried to re-pair it.. Now my phone will not show the Victron on my list of devices... I have turned the phone off and on several times and it will not show the Victron of my list of discoverable devices.. Can any one help with this? Thanks...

Try try rebooting the iPhone, power it down, wait a minute, turn it back on.  Then try to re-pair it to the MPPT.  You might need the number off the back of the MPPT unit to reset the connection.

I often have trouble pairing with the VictronConnect app.  I think the BlueTooth on the iPhones are wonky.

How do you pair it in the first place?

    https://www.victronenergy.com/live/victronconnect:start#bluetooth_smart_-_pairing_and_connecting

Here is how to connect after downloading the VictronConnect app.
    1. Enable the Bluetooth on your phone.
    2. Open VictronConnect, and scan: On a phone or tablet, pull down the screen, or tap the refresh button to initiate a scan. ...
    3. The first time you attempt to connect the phone will ask to pair with the Victron product. Enter the PIN code. ...
    4. The connection is complete.
I think the initial pin code is 000000.

Sam, I tried the steps that you outlined.. l get a message box titled “Bluetooth Pairing Request”. It asks me to Enter the code shown on SmartSolar HQ2005HYSGT... I entered 000000 but that doesn’t work... is there a number on the unit? Mine is buried way under the bed nearly impossible to get to.... last night I linked up without entering anything... Noe it is not discoverable..

Let me search.  In the meantime try 0000 OR 00000.

You will have to locate the controller and take a picture of the PUK number.

That **&^%  number is on the back of the Victron shunt.  I had to take my entire shunt out of the box to find it.  User unfriendly to say the least.

@pthomas745 - the OP needs the code for the controller.  The shunt is with the Victron battery monitor. But, the number is somewhere on the side or back of the SmartSolar MPPT controller.

Ok guys, This has got to be just #*/& magic... I was at my wits end, and since I was in the Sugarcreek area, I was going to go in and see if they could help.... There was no need, last night I tried to pair again and it worked... I don’t understand any of this... I must have tried the same process over a dozen times with no luck, and then bang... it worked... I did do one thing different, I defeated the program from my iPhone and re-installed it... it took a couple of try’s but then it worked...

Glad you got it sorted.  Write down your log in ID, so you do not loose it.

@jpi68 - sometimes there are firmware updates that need to occur before it loads.  I have intermittent luck, too😊

Would there be a reset button on Victron SS MPPT by chance having similar problems on my 2021 cs-s.  Worked for about the first 3 days then I did a newby thing and parked it for a week to get somethings done and forgot to turn battery switch off and ran down battery.  Battery was checked to make sure I didn’t ruin it.  But my app will not find the Victron.  I have deleted app turned off phone forgot app in settings and reloaded all but Bluetooth can’t find Victron.  Any suggesting TYIA.

I would give Victron tech support a call.  There isn’t a reset switch on the MPPT per se.  We had trouble getting our phone to pair, ended up needing to use the ID number on the back,of the MPPT to get it working correctly.

Hi all.. I am having the same issue. I had to change my iPhone and it will not reconnect.  I have tried and tried.  I removed the app, turned off my phone and have even totally disconnected the controller from the trailer for an hour before I put it all back together.  But it still won’t connect!!   Argh.   $&:?!&/&/!!!

@Bclarke @jpi68 For folks having issues with BT pairing, do you have location services and its system services on, and GPS turned on, and have a good GPS lock on your fave mapping software?  If trying to save battery life or privacy you can turn those back off later.

But most devices from the last few years use a Smart Bluetooth low energy protocol that needs location data to help bind. Once bound, you can turn those services back off.  Oh, and turn off any VPN on your device for that initial pairing.

May not be it, but something to try if you've already turned your phone's BT off and on, removed existing pairings, and all the other normal fixes.

The Apple developer's guide suggests for pairing with BLE devices an app should check the Location Services / System Services status and prompt the app user to turn those on if disabled.  But not many developers remember to do that both in the iOS and Android world.

Thank you @DougH... I had a new iPhone 12 a few months ago that needed to be replaced due to a hardware issue.   It connected to that phone just fine.  I did a “restore from backup” on my new phone so am wondering if the phone is remembering some old connection or something.

Location Services is on. I do not have a VPN on this device.  I am not understanding your comments about GPS and mapping software.

Here is what I have done:

    deleted the app
    turned off the phone
    Turned phone on
    reloaded the app
    (several times)

I even disconnected the controller on hopes that it would reset.

Once I got a message that it was “already connected to another device”.

Mostly however this is the message:

Shouldn’t it be 6 zeros? (That is what the app says is the PIN)

Or, should I be getting another code via the Bluetooth connection?  Which, sometimes connects and other times it doesn’t.

I have spent hours ... and even called 4 NuCamp dealers ... so frustrating!

Argh!  Yup, six zeroes for a new Victron.  Fingers crossed another suggestion that works comes through...

I sent nuCamp an email suggesting they record the PUK code on a sticker and place the sticker somewhere accessible.  We see more and more owners that require the number from their installed products.  Sorry BClarke, but you need to get to the back of your controller for that code.

My PUK numbers were written on the outside of the Victron instruction booklets. Look through the packet of instruction booklets you received for the Victron info.

Unfortunately @Sharon_is_SAM the PUK doesn’t work.  It consists of both letters and numbers but the “pairing” screen only accepts numbers.  I even tried just the numbers themselves. After hours of endless play I will call NuCamp in the AM and will report back.  Sigh.

In the meantime... I presume that connecting my batteries back up won’t be impacted other than the fact that they won’t charge to 100%... is this a correct assumption?

I have now replaced the standard battery with 2 lithium batteries.

So appreciate all of the suggestions...

@Bclarke sorry for the hassle.  I know there is a serial number and the PUK code.  Bummer.

Here is my new battery setup ... hope it is correct!

Looks good at Bclarke!  Do you have a shunted battery monitor now?

Ahhhh... no....????    Am I supposed to?   I haven’t turned on the battery switch yet... sort of awaiting approval from this group.

I am waiting to reset the controller (once I figure it out).   I did install a new converter (Progressive PD4100) and an onboard Progressive EMS.  I am also installing a NOCO onboard Gen5x2 for charging and maintenance as needed.

Am I missing a shunt?  Do I need a shunt?   What the heck is a shunt anyway  @Sharon_is_SAM?

No worries!  I saw the small red wire on the positive terminal - we have the same lead for our shunted battery monitor display?  A shunt is a low resistance device that measures amps on the negative side of a circuit to provide a measurement of battery state of charge.  Your Victron controller will give you a battery voltage reading which is typically very close to a voltage reading from a battery monitor.

That is the lead from the inline fuse of the SAE connector.

SOLVED AT LAST!   I feel like having a party...  after many, many hours to try to connect to the Victron app I figured it out with the help of Jordan at NuCamp.  Answer:  In the app you select your device (the controller).  To the right are a few lines (called a hamburger) - tapping it allows you to reset the PIN.  I was fearful of doing so.... but I took the plunge.  It asks for your PUK (which is as you know buried on the back of the installed unit itself).  Then it automatically reset the code to 000000 (6 zeros).  And voila - it set up immediately!

I tried everything..  reset phone, delete and reinstall the app, deleted the app from the iCloud backup, reset all of the settings on my iphone, called 5 NuCamp dealers over the weekend... everything...  so THANK YOU Jordan for pushing me to reset the PIN.  It felt like a "hail Mary" but it worked!
