Plexiglas is acrylic, and IMHO a plastic with better impact properties would be a better choice like ABS or polycarbonate (Lexan). If the wood rots, I'd probably go with ABS for next version, easy to find it in black.

Thanks, would the ABS/ Lexan be easier to drill through for the mounting holes? I know from past experience with Plexiglas, it has a tendency to crack & split, especially when you try to tighten it down, and the surface is not real even.

@ericnliz Yes, exactly. Acrylic is very brittle, harder, it's good for replacing glass, or a plastic that you need to see through, as it has good optic properties, but in terms of impact, it's poor. ABS or Lexan (polycarbonate) is very easy to work with, drill through, etc. It's softer and tougher. For example, when I used to work on cellphones, we would use acrylic for the lenses (that you had to read displays through) but always used lexan for the housings, because it's tough and can take a beating.

Here's a video comparing lexan to acrylic:

But for a cover, Lexan is overkill, so I'd say black ABS would be a good choice.
