Where to Fill Water Tanks?

I need advice from experienced T@Bbers (everyone reading this forum has more experience than this newbie).  Where do you fill your water tanks?  I read about folks who stop overnight at Walmart or similar facilities, and I wonder where you fill your tanks for such dry-docking.  Do you usually travel with a full clean water tank?

Is is there an app for water fill-up stations?

If you know it is going to be a dry camp at destination, I would fill tank at home. Beware that is going to add about 250 pounds to weight and possibly create some liquid surge during stopping, starting and turns.

Once away from home parks may have water (in season) and some travel centers. I think historically Flying J's maybe catered to the RV traveler a bit more, not to say others don't sometimes have water fills too. Many stores, Wal-Mart and others have a water machine, I have been known to buy it by the five gallon bucket, not convenient or cheap but it works in a pinch.

250 pounds of water means a 30 gallon tank.  (water=8 pounds a gallon, approximately.)

My Tab has an 11 gallon fresh water tank, so that should weigh only about 88 pounds.  (2017 Outback).

If all the tanks were full (19 gallon grey water, and a 6 gallon black, 11 fresh)  it would be over 250 pounds.

I fill at home.  Out in the deserts here, most places are getting a bit tight with water.

EDIT:  Does the 400 have a 30 gallon water tank?  In that case, my comment would only apply to the 320 model!

Cheryl, I suspect some people who are going to travel a short distance fill their water tank at home or local facility and drive slowly to their destination.  I noticed you posted to your own Wall and see you have a 400.  Having said that, most people are cautious about tongue weight and fresh water and/or gray/black tank weight can be significant.  Depending on where you travel, you can locate a fresh water source and a dump source.  There are many apps or online web sources for campgrounds, BLM, State and Federal resources etc.  When we traveled to Utah this past spring, we read about a local gas station that allowed filling (free with fuel fill up).  This was important as we camped at a local BLM site with no water available.  Many others will camp at full or limited campgrounds that have water available to them and may not travel with their tanks full.  Others may choose to just take some drinking water with them or just enough water in their fresh tank to flush the toilet.  It really depends on how you plan to travel.

I fill up my tank at home, but I don't drive slowly to my destination :).  It only adds 91 pounds.

You can fill up at campgrounds along the way that have potable water hoses.  There may be a charge, though.

Cheryl, I think you meant while on the road. Some larger gas/travel stations have them. I have used a Love's as well as a local visitor bureau. I do not believe there is an app, but there are sometimes signs that indicate, "Potable water."

@CherylinDallas  I kinda wanna reply, well, like in the olden days, we travel from water hole to water hole! In fact, while we have 2 6 gallon water carriers, we usually travel with one of them full (~48#), and maybe a few gallons in the fresh water tank. You just never know when you’ll need water.

I always fill at home.  If i am out for long enough to need to refill, I use a portable container with a hose.
