Elwel E8 Cooling Service Bulletin

CbusguyCbusguy Member Posts: 771

Thank you for your purchase and welcome to the nuCamp family!

We are excited for your adventures ahead and want to let you know that we are here for you if you need us along the way.  When we use the term ‘family,’ we mean it.  You aren’t simply buying a trailer from us, you are buying a new way of life and joining a community of thousands of caring individuals.

We are a company that prides itself on several things.  One is quality.  Another is doing the right thing - meaning, we are transparent in all of our dealings.  With that, we want to make you aware of a potential cooling issue with your new AIR8 AC unit.

We recently discovered that the new AIR8 AC in the 2020 units was not cooling the unit down properly.  While we acted swiftly upon discovery, we still had a small number of units head out the door and out to dealer lots.  There is a quick and easy solution for this issue…and it is readily available.  We recently sent out a service bulletin to our dealers, so they are fully aware and capable to assist you.  When you speak to your dealer, they will get the venting kit and schedule an install.  The job itself takes less than 20 minutes.

If you have any questions or you feel that going back to the dealership is not a viable option, please reach out to warranty@nucamprv.com for further/additional assistance.  We work with any RV Repair facility and even automotive specialists and handymen.

We apologize for any inconvenience, but want to ensure you are enjoying your new trailer as much as possible.

looking at the document,   we are removing the louvers, sealing the floor edges and then putting hardware cloth over the holes.......

While it probably fixes the issue immediately,   I wonder about water and dust while on the road.

Oh yeah, never mind; it’s over in the factory comments folder.

Both new and old solutions are still concerning to me when it comes to dust and dirt intrusion, especially if traveling gravel/dirt roads.  I’m thinking a mod is in order to block those screened areas while traveling.

Does it actually fix the issue, even? I thought part of the problem was that the hot air exhaust was being picked up by the intake, hence the need for baffles to channel the hot air away from the intake. Perhaps I misunderstood...

And yes, looking at the PDF, the potential for water, dust, and mud dauber/spider/ant intrusion seems like it goes WAY up with this fix. All in all, I’m really glad the change to dark cabinets put me off the 2020 320s, because this new AC so far seems it has more drawbacks than advantages.

Glad to see nuCamp trying to get it resolved quickly, though, and I do hope it helps those affected without creating more problems.

@VictoriaP I thought the air cycling from exhaust to intake was part of the issue as well.

Hmmm. I suppose testing is in order then to see both whether the new fix works and just how bad the potention for intrusion is. If it were me, I’d want some sort of automatic open-and-close louvered vent on those openings, rather than mere hardware cloth. I do wonder if the guy that just had the major dust issue on his new 400 had this fix in place.

Paul Chamberlain at Beckley’s RV just did a video on the Air8 air conditioner that is in the new 2020 T@B 400 and 320's. He doesn't address the service issue and clearly shows the underside where the intake is to cool the unit.  It looks like if you were parked on dirt and had your a/c running, it would suck dust right up into the unit and on muddy roads, the intake would get covered in mud potentially clogging it.  He does mention the mod fix of the metal plate over it shown in this forum but does not address what happens when you are not sitting parked on pavement running the a/c (campground dust, road dust, road mud).  Watch and see what you think.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a_jKy1cTSKw.

I don't think the parked and running aspect is any different than the previous years cool cat and danby.  The intake velocity isn't vacumn cleaner level and the exhaust on the 320 blows from roughly the midline of the trailer toward the drivers side away from the intake. And it is separated by the frame rail.   I may add an additional diverter to the intake pointed to the passenger side.

Not sure if the grills are aluminum, but they make magnetic covers for home air registers I might use some of those to cover the intake and exhaust I feel the need.

For our trips so far it has been a non isssue

Good to know.  I wasn't sure what the NuCamp "fix" actually did since by looking at the video, I'm not seeing any other issues as long as dirt and mud aren't a problem.  The one I ordered (which is the one Paul is doing the video from) falls in the VIN number range requiring the fix.  If anyone else sees what NuCamps Service Bulletin is referring to after looking at the video, please chime in. Otherwise, I guess I'll let the dealer and NuCamp figure it out.

There is a factory statement on the website here somewhere.    The fix is removing the louvered covers finishing the edges of the flooring and installing hardware cloth.....

Basically it leaves the intake and exhaust wholes completely open.....well the hardware cloth will keep the critters out.
