Shutdown National Campgrounds?

    I was staying in a primitive cabin in Kings Canyon/Sequoia when the 1995 shutdown happened. The park was shut down and rangers chased everyone out. And when I say "chased" I mean that when they caught us taking one last drive through the park they escorted us out. One of our friends had come all the way from England so it was a big bummer. But I still think that closing the national parks was the right move. No one should be shocked by the damage that's being done in the absence of "adult" supervision. This was completely foreseeable.

    Returning to this thread as there is a threat of a shutdown in early February.  
    We have planned a tour of National parks and monuments which may not happen.  We have decided to travel anyway and make an alternate set of plans just in case.  We are having an exceptionally grey winter here in Northeast Ohio and we want to get some sunshine!  
    Anyone have suggestions for areas to visit in Texas, and southern New Mexico and Arizona?  TIA

    Sadly, we lost our Amy just before Christmas. National Parks do not allow dogs on the trails so our travels had been limited in the past. We're hoping that the shutdown doesn't keep us from taking her ashes to places previously denied. We'll be following the news and this thread for updates.
