2024 and 2025 NuCamp owners.....What model of WFCO do you have?

pthomas745pthomas745 Moderator Posts: 4,152
Are they still using the WFCO "Auto Detect" Models?
If so: are the newer trailers coming with the older "problematic" auto detect models without the "jumper fix" that rolled out last year sometime?
Or, are they upgraded with the "jumper" that simply tells the WFCO "charge lithium only"?

This thread has a long discussion, but on the last page is a photo of the WFCO including the model number and a firmware version.

It would be nice to know if the trailers are being shipped without this "known problem".
Here is a thread with pictures of the "jumper" that simply tells the WFCO to be a lithium charger only.

2025 Tab 400 - Black Canyon with Convenience Package

Not all 2025 Tab 400s come with this, especially if they don't have the lithium battery added by convenience package

2024 320S Boondock Black Canyon. Came with a single 100ah LiFePO4 battery, a 100|30 MPPT, and a 500A|50mv smart shunt. I added a second battery, a second MPPT, and an inverter. I might go to an RV park once every couple or few weeks, and I know the AC, microwave, etc., all work.

Unsure how being on shore power charges the LiFePO4 batteries, if it does it, and if so how, does that work, etc. Is there a way to confirm? When I'm driving I'm guessing my vehicle heavy duty alternator is sending some power to the camper batteries (guessing not much). When I'm boondocking, the batteries are being charged by solar.

I have thought about confirming if power is sent to the camper battery when the Jeep is off, and maybe installing a DCtoDC in the camper, and running a dedicated wire from it to the Jeep's heavy duty alternator. I hate that I'd have to handle connecting and disconnecting the wire though.

Here is my WFCO 8735...the cover shows Firmware "V1.19", assuming the sticker is correct.

@donmontalvo - to know if your AD converter is in lithium mode, plug into shorepower and check for a blue light near the bottom of the DC fuse panel.

2024 400 - It has the standard WFCO WF-8955-AD-WAGO . Initially , all I could get was the green light . I was patient , and eventually it did finally "Auto Detect" , and switched over to a blue light all by itself . At first I did contact WFCO to inquire about getting the "jumper" to lock it into lithium mode, but they were unhelpful . Just sent me an email with about 25 nonsensical questions thinking I was doing something wrong . While waiting for help from WFCO , the charger did change over to blue on its own . Just had to be patient I guess . Now its blue everytime I check it , and the occasional red light indicating bulk mode when the battery is "low".

The camper came new with LiFePO4. I very rarely use shore power, but I will check the next time I do. Thanks for the info, noted.

The reason I brought this up is that a couple of owners of 2024 and 2025 trailers over on the FB page are asking about why their shunts are not "synchronizing".  Of course, there were several Victron controllers and shunts that were not configured for lithium charging, or had the wrong battery setup.  (A continuing problem!)
One owner's controller and shunt were configured properly, and they had the trailer on shore power for a few days.  With the WFCO "blue light on".
But: the WFCO would not synchronize their shunt settings, since (I have to take their word for this) the WFCO was reaching the "charged voltage" and then immediately dropping back below that number.  The shunt requires at least three minutes at the "charged" voltage value to synchronize.
A call to WFCO and the owner got the same old advice: run the battery down to a certain lower level. They suggested dropping it about 20-30 amp hours, instead of the advice from a couple of years ago to bring the battery all the way down to 10 percent, etc.  And then let the WFCO "auto detect" the battery.  This is with the "blue light" constantly on.

The firmware version on this owner's trailer (a 2025 Tab 360) is V1.21A.

WFCO needs to ditch the auto-detect  feature and simply provide a physical switch, or better yet NuCamp should switch to Progressive Dynamics converters.

Deeper in the settings you can reduce the sync detect time from 3 minutes to 1 minute. However mine still doesn't sync. It hits charged level and drops back to hold level right away, as described above. I gave up the effort and did it manually in a way. Charge to 14.4 and manually set the state of charge to 100% at that time.  So far it's been quite accurate; everything in and out of the batteries counted so it's reliable in that sense.  (I am on blue light LiPofe mode with jumper.)

@Gomers2 resetting the "charged detection time" is a good strategy, as is doing the sync manually.    Battleborn, in their "BMV settings" page, claims that the "charged detection time" should be three minutes.  Hence...a lot of confusion by new owners who want to "protect" their battery investment.

I am almost positive that detection time suggestion came from Victron tech support. He walked me thru optimal settings in the advanced menu when I was dealing with the WFCO AD "feature." But it's moot; it only stays at 14.4 for < 1 minute and does not sync per se. But I'm comfortable with that because the charger is bringing the 🔋 up to proper voltage, then backing off to full storage level, the SOC seems accurate, and everything works as it should.

    2024 320 CS-S Black Canyon - WFCO 8735-AD Firmware: 1.21A

No blue light near DC fuses.  Red and green lights when first plugged in then red light went out.

If it is green, then the AD did not kick in and it is charging on the Lead Acid profile.

Funny thing is that I could have sworn I saw a blue light a couple of days ago (I remember thinking "what the heck is that about?").  Right now the battery is topped up (13.75V), I'll pay close attention the next time it drains down a bit.

Mine has a blue light ... but it's still not charging to 14.4 or even 14.2 for long enough to top balance the lithium battery when on shore power.  I realize there's disagreement over whether top balancing is necessary - but Battleborn seems pretty sure it is - to ensure battery is working as well as it can for as long as it can.  I'm probably going to buy a Victron IP65 battery charger and have it permanently installed at a local dealer who I trust.  They said they can bypass the WFCO charger.

Let the battery drain down to 70% overnight then plugged the camper in this morning - got a brief flash of blue from the WFCO then right back to green.  Given the well documented problems with the auto-detect one wonders why NuCamp persists in using this converter.  LauraC I think you have the right idea with the separate charger.
