Tilted Photos

Some of you may have noticed recently that photos inserted into comments are occasionally rotated 90 degrees.

Vanilla has finally incorporated automatic photo resizing. Admins can set a maximum dimension, and over-sized photos will be automatically reduced upon uploading. Keeping photos to a certain size limit really helps when viewing the forum on slower internet connections, but with cell phones and other devices taking increasingly higher resolution photos, it's sometimes hard to prevent those large files from clogging the bandwidth.

The resizing feature works well, with one obvious glitch. Oversized photos in portrait orientation are resized and rotated before display. (Photos in landscape orientation are resized but displayed correctly.)

Currently the only solution to this is to resize photos yourself before uploading. There are many tools available to do this. Photos that do not exceed 800 pixels in either dimension will not be resized and should display normally.

    So, are you saying that if a portrait mode photo is resized with the longer dimension no more than 800 pixels before submission, then it will retain its vertical orientation & not be resized or re-oriented?

    Brian, if you resize your photos so they are 800 pixels or less on the longest dimension, they will not be resized or rotated when you post them.  I use a IPad (Mac works the same) and when selecting photos, you can tap on the Show Selected at bottom and then click/tap on Actual Size then select Medium photo size, then post the photo, and Bob’s your uncle... No more resizing or rotation of your photos.

    @BrianZ - Yes.   Here is a “portrait” mode photo resized to 800 x 800.

    Photo in portrait not resized prior to posting.  It flipped to “landscape” view.

    FWIW, I've noticed this flipping phenomenon somewhere else as well. When I manually reduced my photo size and tried again, the image displayed properly.

    Must be something inherent to a commonly used code.
