AIR VENT OPEN TO ELEMENTS?

We just bought a 2005 TAB. I'm cleaning it up and notice there is SO much debris (tree needles, etc) inside this vent that is on the outside...and doesn't water get in here? I am thinking of buying some screen fabric from the hardwood store, taking this plate off, sweeping it out and then placing the screening fabric on the opening before placing the vent back on. What do you think?

That would be either a Heater or A/C vent, either one gets pretty warm.
The metal grate is there to keep things out but is metal because of the heat.
I'd open it and clean it from time to time but keep the metal.

Whilst not in use, you can add a solid cover over the vent, which looks like,the AC vent, still gets hot though.  You can put snaps in the corner likemthe current TaB has, or add aluminum channels to slide a plastic or metal cover over the vent to keep debris out between trips. There have been several discussions here about adding a cover.
