First of all, thank you for allowing me to be part of this forum. I am learning so much. I want to purchase a use T@b Max S in the next few months, but first of all I need a good used tow vehicle. My 2014 Rav4 won't cut it. My question has to do with buying a vehicle that is ready to tow with very few modifications. Are there used TV's out there that are already set up with the 7-pin connector, correct hitch height, brake controller, etc? I realize there is probably not an all-perfect TV, but I would like to have as few mods as possible. What's the perfect TV for you?

There are many variables, so no easy answers--you will need to study up and ask the right questions.
I tow with a V6 Nissan Frontier with the factory tow package. So far, so good.

The 7pin is common for campers, but from what I've read, a "tow package" often is only a 4pin connector, or the basic electrical connector for a utility-type trailer. You'll need to specify the 7pin connector in your search, but also be sure that it's wired with a heavy (8 or 10ga) 12v charging conductor. It seems that often this wire is too light-duty for a camper.
Don't settle for a marginal tow-rating on the tow vehicle. 2500# tow-rating is minimal, and cutting it kind of close for safety in stopping, or handling emergency situations on the highway.

Also make sure you have a mechanic check the vehicle before purchasing. Any vehicle used to tow can have issues with the transmission and/or engine if not used and maintained properly. Good luck and welcome to the T@B world!

My current one is a 2009 with the 4.6 V8 and a 7K towing capacity. They have 5 passenger seating and the back seat folds down, and has a short truck bed to put all the "dirty" stuff in. The 2009 has a complete tow package with the charge line, isolation relay all built in. Included a pigtail wire to plug the brake controller in if needed. (I don't as I have surge breaks). The Sport Trac also has vinyl floors so no vehicle carpeting to get dirty. I added an ARE Camper Shell Cap to the 2009, so can put lots of stuff in the back, and not have to put anything extra in the T@B.
A transmission cooler is standard on both trucks.

I'm not trying to start an arguement and will not argue with you. There are many discussions here on the forum concerning under-sized tow vehicles, insurance and legal liabilities. The search box is in the upper right corner of this page.

@dmerzbac I would ditto everyone's advice to pay the extra money for the factory tow package. If you go online and "build" your dream vehicle on many manufacturer's sites, you'll find if you pick the standard factory tow package the engine size options become limited. This is because of the manufacturer's recommended hp, torque and many other engine/hitch thingies (best explained by a mechanic and not a microbiologist) for towing are only shown. Other things that may be included in factory towing packages are stiffer rear springs and/or shocks, heavier alternator, wiring harnesses not installed next to hot exhausts, a tow button that will prevent excessive shifting into cruising gears, etc (just to name a few). I didn't get the option of a built-in brake controller, but those are offered in some packages too.
You don't really want to pull the absolute maximum that your TV is rated (passengers + cargo + camper). You'll get better mileage, handling, and peace of mind if your TV can pull more than you need. I tow with a mid-sized GMC Canyon pickup with factory tow package. I have a max tow of 7000 lbs. With that in mind, my hitch and hitch ball are rated for 6000 lbs. My cargo/passenger limit is 1460 lbs (as per the door sticker). With wet weight of camper, I'm probably at half capacity (except if Harvey sneaks in extra stuff.. bears... *rolls eyes*).
Good luck finding what fits your needs the best! When you get it, picts are required Happy researching!
