We are rockhounds which is a major reason why we wanted an Outback - our second trip out with the trailer last weekend we traveled from the bay area CA to the Madras Oregon area for their annual gem and mineral show - it's a special weekend for rockhounds and one of the local thunderegg collecting mines open up areas for digging that only open a couple of times a year.
First night we spent at the Crater Lake campground - neither of us has ever seen the lake so we decided to work in a touristy side trip on the way up. Of course the literature doesn't tell you that they have swarming mosquitoes the size of my dog haha. Less than 1 minute out of the truck and I had four bites. Needless to say we didn't unpack much other than chairs we barely used ... and beer ... we couldn't wait to scoot out in the early AM.
Edit: inserted this picture we took of Crater Lake. Spectacular! Must see it to believe it.
The next three nights we enjoyed a lake side spot at Lake Simtustus resort near Madras OR. Neat little place - the resort caretakers literally went out of their way to make us feel special. Good fishing and good swimming although we did zero of either - well the dog swam a lot - can't keep him out of the water. Even though you see a citronella candle on the table it was not needed. We didn't see a single mosquito for the three nights thank god.
Rockhounding and digging for thundereggs at Richardson's Rock Ranch and other locations, attending the Madras Gem show was the focus of the journey.
Home on the last night was a simple dirt parking lot and a field for Charley to run around in, courtesy of the BLM overlooking Red Bluff CA. We were all dog-tired and the sudden rise in temperature (88 degrees at 10pm) didn't seem to bother us a bit.
Here we are at Standing Stone State Park Hilham TN 2/3 hook ups. Lost power from thunder storm about hr. It got hot real quick able to open windows and turn on fantastic fan while it was raining still stayed dry.
Some nice looking sites - I'm a sucker for water. OutbackAZ - That's even cleaner than mine - The only time I'm that sparse is an overnighter when I don't even unhitch :-)
Hi SAM they are round volcanic rocks that when you cut them open there can be all kinds of goodies inside. You may have heard of geodes - same thing only geodes are usually hollow with crystals. From the locations we dig at most of them have clear agate inside but every once in a while (1 in 10?) has a 'special' agate that contains moss or plumes. We polish those for jewelry and sell them in our Etsy store.
Here is a very rare one that contains red and yellow plumes.
Thanks! Flagpole Buddy. Top mount is attached to the handle, bottom mount is attached to a wooden block held in place by the stabilizer. Pole is fiberglass and extends 16'.

New campground near Nevada City, CA called Inn Town Campground. Every couple of sites had a communal propane fire pit and chairs to share/ gather around. Interesting idea. No real fires allowed in these woods in California. Met another t@b family that was camping there too. Pricey but we were also visiting family in the area.

Tearstock 2016, and yes, I broke down and purchased the awning. It was so hot that the Visor wasn't enough and the T@B Tent was too closed up. And, I had already started putting stuff away so the 2nd chair and table were already in the truck. Luci light charging and Anerican Flag display are in the photo.
