Early in our marriage, I tried to convince DH how efficient it would be to put the drip coffee maker on a timer so we’d have coffee as soon as we awoke, how sweet is that? In fact, the SMELL of coffee would wake us! Toss the alarm clock! But nooooo. The beans had to be freshly ground, and newly oxygenated water from the tap used. These measures enhanced the taste. Purists! Gotta love em.

@ericnliz The reason for wanting your beans ground as close to the brewing as possible is for them to hold as much of the coffee goodness as possible: the gases, the oils, the "essence" of what makes it coffee. The losses are small, but it is a real thing. The analogy I use is an apple: why not peel your apple when you buy it and store it in the fridge in a airtight container?

When I'm camping and using the Aeropress, I do just grind up two day's worth of beans and toss them into a Ball jar...

@DougH I have the basic "early adopter" Delta DTB4824 PID. It changes temps pretty quickly when I (rarely) adjust it, especially if it is warmed up. But, the resolution on this one ( as near as I know) is only in 1 degree increments, and the Auber can be fine tuned down to tenths. Its been a while since I looked closely at the Auber, but I think they take longer to change temps due to that level of precision. (Just a guess.)

I worked to control as much of the coffee process as I could, and the PID was a gamechanger. And I bought a little calibrated tamper that helped immensely, too. And the scale to measure the 18.5 grams of coffee. And the Brita filter. And the fancy timer for timing the shots.

I'm with @ericnliz - a simple percolator works just fine for me! My wife likes the french press, which is fine too.

Nice setup! I opted for a side-handle hand grinder (HandGround Co). Having something spin in circles towards me is asking for trouble because I am so uncoordinated. I also have more strength for the side-handle rotation and can keep it nearly at arm's length

There's a new dremel tool called a Versital (sp?). Almost looks like a tiny hand sander. Seems like a great way to connect to a grinder. Redneck Grinders, UNITE!

I don't drink pots of coffee. I want 1-2 cups of quality coffee prior to noon. Then I switch to decaf anything. I do all I can so I can get at least 5 hrs of sleep minimum at night, so that means nothing caffeinated after noon-time.

I can handle a 4 shot 15 oz americano in the morning, and after that a few diet Cokes the rest of the day. I consider those 4 shots a good part of a healthy breakfast. Or, just breakfast.

So I’m back to drinking coffee, using a french press at home, melita single cup drip in L@dybug. I recently learned that a 7gram scoop per cup is good. Turns out I have one. I prefer the taste of kettle boiled water over microwaved water for tea so coffee can’t be much different. My question - is it 8oz water to 7grams grounds, adjusted for mug size? That’s probably as technical as I want to get for now. Thanks!

In the generic coffee world, a cup is 6 oz. Who decided to change the Imperial System? Keurig does state their pods are used for a real cup = 8 oz.

@Homebodyatheart, I've been doing 28g per 16oz cup, but @pthomas745 convinced me to try 18g, and to brew it longer, so I think you're about right, for an 8oz cup. A little more coffee for a little stronger, maybe.

@ChanW thanks! So 18g coffee to 16 oz water. I measured 8 oz of water and marked the 1,2,3 cup lines on my french press in permanent marker. I didn't adjust for the depth of wet grounds, but that just makes it stronger.

I left my Aeropress at home, also my cleverdripper and mokapot. Brought only the ..Melitta pour over and a French press... and a manual Hario burr grinder. I have two or three cups in the morning and one just before bed. Gotta have my evening coffee.
